Lot 535
CARIA. Antioch ad Maeandrum. Circa 90/89-65/60 BC. Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 3.55 g, 12 h), Menander, magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. ANTIOXEΩN / MENAN Zebu bull reclining left; all within laurel wreath. Thonemann -, cf. Group A, 4 (for a unique tetradrachm of Menander). Unpublished and unique, the first known drachm of Menander. Nearly fine.

The magistrate Menander is hitherto only known from a unique tetradrachm (Thonemann 4.a). Interestingly, the maeander pattern border from that coin is replaced by a laurel wreath on the present drachm, thus attesting the concurrent use of both types of reverse borders
